There are many different types of radio-controlled watercraft. There are sport boats, which are perhaps the most common type of watercraft available to the hobbyist. There are scale boats, which are replicas of real full-size boats. Some of these are small, while others can be huge, weighing hundreds of pounds. There are also radio-controlled submarines.

Another variant is the sailboat, used for pleasure sailing, or for racing. In fact, there are rules for racing sailboats, the same set of rules that govern full-sized crewed sailboats.

Power boats are those driven by some type of combustion engine, or an electric engine, although there are some that are powered by steam engines. Some are ready-to-run (RTR) right out of the box, while others are almost-ready-to-run (ARTR). Finally, there are some that are built from kits.

Some minor categories of watercraft include combat (war) vessels, tugboats, and oddball things like surfboards.
