Radio-controlled aircraft typically fall into one of two categories: airplanes, and helicopters. Within the airplane category there are many subcategories, including park flyers and trainers, scale and sport planes, pattern planes, sailplanes and gliders, jets, and pylon racers. Another small miscellanous category is flying bird models.

Some planes use electric power, while others use some type of combustion engine. Like other radio-controlled vehicles, there are "toy" and "hobby" level planes and helicopters. Also, there are those that are RTF (ready to fly), ARTF (almost ready to fly), and then there are kits where you first need to build the plane before flying it.
